Personalized gifts: what to check before you order
Personalization is useful when it points to a shared memory or an everyday habit. It is less useful when it only puts a name on something the recipient would not otherwise want. Start with the story, then choose the object.
| Idea | Personal detail that matters | Check before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Recipe notebook | A family dish or a place to collect new ones | Paper quality, page count and whether the cover can be wiped. |
| House illustration | A home that carries a memory | Whether you receive a print, a digital file or both. |
| Book embosser | A reader’s own library | Exact spelling and the imprint size on a real page. |
| Photo magnets | A small set of shared moments | Cropping, photo resolution and surface compatibility. |
Proof before production. Check every name, date and address in the exact version the maker will use. Ask whether revisions are included and when approval must happen. The estimated arrival should include proofing and making time as well as shipping, especially across borders.
Consider privacy: a home address or a child’s full name may not belong on a visible object. If the recipient prefers less display, a private recipe book or a small keepsake may fit better than wall art. If you cannot confirm the details in time, give a thoughtful uncustomized item and a handwritten note.
