The Magic Pixels guide
What to check before buying reclaimed wood furniture
Choose reclaimed wood furniture by how it will work in your room, then by its appearance. A photograph can help you judge the style, but it cannot settle whether a drawer opens comfortably, a finish tolerates your routine or the item fits through the delivery route. Ask for those details before ordering.
Measure the space you use, not just the furniture
Mark the footprint on the floor, then include the space you need around it. For a desk, pull back your chair and check that someone can still pass. For a sideboard, allow for fully open doors and drawers. For a bench, check where feet and bags will go when someone sits down.
Check the route into the room as well. Compare the packed or assembled dimensions with doorways, turns and stairs. If legs or other parts are removable, confirm that with the seller rather than assuming the item can be dismantled. A piece that fits its final corner may still be difficult to get there.
Separate material character from condition
Reclaimed wood may have variations in grain, colour and markings. Ask whether the photographs show the exact item you will receive or an example of the design. If you want a consistent colour across several pieces, request current photographs and discuss how much variation to expect.
A decorative mark and a functional problem are different questions. Ask about wobble, splits, repairs, drawer movement and the condition of joints. For an item sold as used, inspect close-up photographs of the top, edges, underside and hardware. The word “reclaimed” does not by itself establish age, condition, provenance or environmental certification.
Match the finish to everyday use
Ask what finish is applied and what care instructions come with it. A desk used for drinks and snacks has different demands from a display surface. A dining table needs care guidance that suits meals, spills and cleaning. Confirm whether coasters, mats or particular cleaning products are recommended.
Do not infer water resistance or heat resistance from the wood species or the appearance of the surface. Check the seller’s guidance for the specific finish. Before placing a piece near a radiator or in direct sun, ask whether that location is suitable and how the finish should be maintained.
Compare the practical tradeoffs
| Option | Useful when | Tradeoff | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desk with a drawer | You want to put small work items away | The drawer can reduce leg space | Clearance beneath the drawer and the usable work surface |
| Open table | You need a flexible surface and simple access | Storage must come from elsewhere | Leg positions, chair access and care instructions |
| Sideboard | You want concealed storage against a wall | Doors and drawers need room to open | Internal shelf dimensions, opening clearance and installation requirements |
| Bench | You need a place to sit while getting ready | It takes passage space when occupied | Seat dimensions, intended use and the seller's load guidance |
Settle assembly, delivery and returns before paying
Find out which parts arrive assembled, what tools are needed and whether the instructions require wall fixing. Follow the manufacturer’s installation guidance; do not assume a tall or heavy-looking item is stable in every setting. If you rent, consider whether the required installation is practical for your home.
Compare the total delivered cost, not just the listed price. Check whether delivery reaches your room or stops at the entrance, who handles assembly and what happens if the item arrives damaged. For returns, ask about the deadline, collection arrangements, packaging requirements and any charges. Custom finishes or sizes may have different terms, so read the policy for your actual order.
Questions before you choose
Will the wood look exactly like the photograph?
Check whether the listing shows the individual piece or a representative example. Ask the seller for current photographs when exact colour and markings matter. Avoid planning a precise match from a single photograph taken under unknown lighting.
Is reclaimed wood automatically the more sustainable choice?
The description alone is not enough to compare environmental impact. If that matters to your decision, ask about sourcing evidence, any claimed certification, manufacturing and delivery. Do not treat a material label as proof of a specific environmental benefit.
What if I cannot get the measurements I need?
Ask before ordering. If the missing dimension determines whether a chair fits, a drawer opens or the item can be delivered, choose a listing with clearer information. A generous returns policy does not remove the effort of repacking a large piece.
