The Magic Pixels guide
Choosing a desk for a small room
A desk can fit against a wall and still make the room awkward to use. Start with the space you need while working, including your chair, cables and anything that stays on the surface.
Measure the working space
Mark the desk footprint on the floor with removable tape. Pull your chair back as you would to stand up, then walk past it. Check cupboard doors and drawers in the same area. A narrow tabletop is only useful if the whole setup fits your routine.
Depth matters as much as width. Put your laptop, keyboard and notebook on an existing table to see how much surface you actually use. If you use a monitor arm, check the desk’s edge thickness, rear clearance and the manufacturer’s mounting requirements before buying.
Choose where the clutter goes
A drawer can keep small items off the surface, but it can also reduce space for your legs. Compare the clearance beneath it with your usual sitting position. Open shelves are easier to reach, though everything on them remains visible from the rest of the room.
For a desk in a bedroom or living room, think about the end of the working day. A place to put away the laptop may matter more than another decorative shelf.
Look at the practical details
Check the merchant’s measurements, assembly instructions, finish and care guidance. Reclaimed wood can vary in colour and markings, so a listing photo should not be treated as a promise of identical grain. If the desk will sit near a radiator or sunny window, check the care advice for that material.
